Pete Doherty’s German blunder

Published on 29 November 2009 - 9:18pm
More about:

British rock singer Pete Doherty has infuriated Germans at a concert in Munich by singing the first verse of the German national anthem.

The verse, which begins with the words 'Deutschland, Deutschland über alles' (Germany, Germany above all), has been banned in the country since the end of the Second World War. Only the third verse of the anthem may be sung.

The audience at the concert greeted Doherty’s performance with a chorus of boos. Although he was then permitted to continue, the concert and its accompanying live broadcast by the Bayerische Rundfunk were stopped a few songs later.

Currently a singer and songwriter in the band Babyshambles, Doherty is notorious for his well-publicised drug use.

This guy has trashed his career. It's such a shame though, because his music is really good. I wish he would just get into a Drug Rehab Treatment center and fix himself. Drugs are ruining his life.

Ach, maak je niet druk man! His brainpower is at such a low level that he didn't even realize he's singing. I mean ... what he calls singing. I'm sure he even think that he's a handsome guy while being the most ugly person who has ever performed on stage.

The first sentence of this articel is incorrect: "British rock singer Pete Doherty has infuriated Germans at a concert in Munich by singing the first verse of the German national anthem." He didn't sing the first verse of the German national anthem. He sang the 1st verse of a song called "Deutschlandlied". The German national anthem is in fact only the third verse of this song. All other verses are not part of the German national anthem. The Nazis used the first verse a lot (the infamous "Deutschland über alles...") and this resulted in it being banned from official use. In addition singing this verse is socially not well received and people singing it would be considered to be nazis or at least from the far right wing by most Germans.

Actually, the "Deutschlandlied" with its notorious first verse isn't the national anthem - the 3rd verse is.

The first stanza is, in fact, not banned, simply frowned upon. What is banned is the second part of the anthem of the Third Reich, the so-called Horst Wessel Song.
