Peru's Prime Minister Yehude Simon says he will resign in the coming weeks once a crisis over indigenous rights in the Amazon has been resolved and calm returns.
Plans by the government of President Alan García to open the oil and mineral-rich Amazon rain forest to development by foreign companies sparked violent protest by indigenous inhabitants. Clashes with police left at least 34 people dead. Indigenous leaders say the measures would threaten their way of life. Under pressure from the opposition and international groups, Mr Simon announced on Monday his government would seek to repeal the legislation.
