Perfect Storm - child sailor's plans whip up frenzy

Published on : 27 August 2009 - 10:35am | By RNW News Desk
More about:

The debate on whether 13-year-old Dutch girl Laura Dekker should have been allowed to  become the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world was a heated one. Now the Dutch courts have ruled against the trip. See, Judge blocks solo sailing trip of 13-year-old

What do you think, should she have been allowed to go?

Laura's parents are experienced sailors who fully backed their daughter's record-breaking plan. Should that have counted for more?

Laura has been sailing since she was a toddler and has already made numerous solo trips  - her supporters said she was no ordinary child and should have been allowed to go - opponents said it was too dangerous and the psychological effects of such a journey were too unpredictable.

Should the state intervene in cases like this or should families be able to choose for themselves what to do?

Laura"s determination ahead of the ruling, listen here.

Professor of Education Micha de Winter from Utrecht University said all along it was too much for her, listen here.

If she is not seriously allowed by the court, the death can be coming to her as being unhappiness and unhealthy. Please let her wonderful dream go!

She obviously knows what she's doing. She'll be monitored at every moment by her parents and sponsors. She's a real, born sailor. Let her go and follow her all the way, to let her know those who need to be, are behind her. It is very young but anyone who can do and has done what she has already done, must be extremely capable. If she waited one more year though, she would still be young enough to beat the record. Good on you Laura. I think it's great, your fantastic ambitions. Just, take care out there.

Let her try to get the insurance coverage required of any would-be world sailor on such a voyage, this would stop such a circumnavagation in its tracks before it hits the water.

Ok, she maybe experienced, but I wonder who really wants the medal. I think this is a M&D that are trying to live out their dream thro their daughter. Seems she was indoctrinated very young into the world of sailing.

Every child has ambitions. But not every child has enough expertise and or maturity to fullfill these ambitions. I have a 13 Year old granddaughter. If she were to want to set sail and I had to make the decision to let her or not; my answer would be "NO!" But children differ in thier abilities and capabilities. I assume that Laura Dekker won´t be detered by what others say or think. So instead of critic I wish her "Godspeed" and that she comes back safely.

The sea has never been friendly to man.At most it has been the accomplice of human restlessness.

Let her just do it, she might make it!

It is good to have ambitions and hope for the best. However, the parents should know that there are, dangers of the rough seas, inhospitable weather, loneliness, and sharks (and human sharks) out there. Awards and rewards can wait! Moreover, there will start a race to break her record, if she succeeds in setting sail, which will be a bad trend! I remember what I read in school: Trust in God but keep your gunpowder dry!

Why doesn't she wait until she's a bit older? Answer: because she wants the world record and the glory and, oh yeah, the money that goes with it. This is irresponsible she should be stopped - how many people out there with teenage kids would let them go around the world on their own? I only leave them at home alone if the neighbours are on high alert.

13 is pretty young - my Mum only let me go the shops on my own when I was 14.....
Sarah Farquah 26 August 2009 - 5:24pm
If Laura is proved competent she should be able to go - why do governments insist on prying into everyone's lives? Leave us alone.
