Parliament is opposed to a code of conduct barring politicians from commenting on court rulings.
Chief Justice Geert Corstens of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands said on Wednesday that such a code might prove helpful. The justice said politicians should not comment on verdicts, and that criticisms from parliament undermined the administration of justice. In the past few months, politicians have repeatedly commented on court verdicts.
Nearly all parties have rejected the proposed code of conduct. The Christian Democratic CDA says most politicians are quite reserved in their comments, while the Labour Party says judges should show some understanding for reactions from society. The conservative VVD argues that politicians should not interfere in individual cases, but adds that judges should come down from their 'ivory towers'.
