Paris hands ETA suspect to Madrid

Published on 21 September 2009 - 8:00pm
More about:

France has temporarily handed over the suspected former military chief of the Basque separatist movement ETA to the Spanish authorities for questioning.

Garikoitz Aspiazu, alias Txeroki, was escorted by Spanish police officers on his arrival at Getafe military base, south of the capital Madrid. Spain wants to question Mr Aspiazu in connection with five attacks in 2002 and a January 2006 bomb attack at Madrid airport that left two people dead.

The suspected ETA chief was arrested in France last year. It is the first time that the French authorities have handed an ETA suspect to Spain before trying the suspect themselves. A Paris judge has charged Mr Aspiazu with the December 2007 murder of two Spanish undercover police officers.
