Papuan inmates take advantage of strike

Published on 28 September 2009 - 1:03pm
More about:

Fifty-four inmates escaped from the Bomana Correctional Institution near Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea on Sunday. The authorities say only four have been captured so far.

The inmates were able to escape with ease since many prison wardens were on strike and failed to show up for work due to a pay dispute. In addition, police officers could not respond quickly because most were maintaining security at an important rugby league match against Australia.

The Bomana Correctional Institution houses between 600 and 700 inmates.
