The Pakistani army has further expanded the scope of its offensive against Taliban insurgents in the northwest of the country.
The army is now also active in Waziristan, an area seen as a Taliban and al-Qaeda stronghold. The authorities say the offensive will only end when all insurgents have been taken out.
The latest operation targets local Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in particular. The Pakistani campaign against insurgents in the northwest border region with Afghanistan started seven weeks ago. More than two million civilians have fled the violence.
