Oxfam: Somali refugee camps overcrowded

Published on 3 September 2009 - 12:21pm
More about:

The situation in reception camps for Somali refugees in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya is worse than thought up to now.

Aid agency Oxfam calls it an "inhuman situation" with overcrowded camps lacking basic essentials. In the border region of Somalia half a million people are living in a 15 kilometre stretch of land.

Earlier the United Nations sounded the alarm about the situation in Somalia. It says almost four million people in the Horn of Africa could face starvation as a result of civil war and extreme drought.
