The chair of the conservative VVD party, Ivo Opstelten, has been appointed as the head of the Olympic Plan 2028 Council. In his new capacity, the former mayor of Rotterdam will try to bring the Olympic Games to the Netherlands in 2028.
The Dutch Olympic Committee and the Dutch Sports Federation (NOC*NSF), which announced the news, say Mr Opstelten's brief includes initiating a broad social discussion to prepare the country as a serious candidate. The year 2028 will be the centennial of the 1928 Olympic Games, which were hosted in Amsterdam.
