The United States is to send an ambassador to Syria for the first time in five years. President Barack Obama has nominated career diplomat Robert Ford for the post in Damascus.
The US recalled its envoy to Syria in response to the murder of Lebanon's former prime minister, Rafik Hariri, in February 2005. The US blames the bombing on Syria, although Damascus denies any involvement. Mr Ford's appointment has yet to be approved by the US Senate.
