Obama 50: forever young

Published on : 4 August 2011 - 3:23pm | By Angelo van Leemput (Photo: ANP)
More about:

US President Barack Obama is celebrating his 50th birthday on Thursday. But does age matter? When Obama became president in 2009, he was young and sexy. Now strain and responsibility has clearly taken its toll. But he’s not the only president to age on the job.

President Obama himself is not too concerned about this personal milestone:

“I feel real good about the 5-0. I’ve got a little greyer since I took this job, but otherwise, I feel pretty good.”

But if Mr Obama looks in the mirror (or newspaper), he can’t deny that it goes a little further than just the few grey hairs... Earlier this year he admitted that the bags under his eyes were due to his demanding job.

It seems to be the fate of every prime minister or president. You’re elected as a young and wild god and during your term of office, you gradually age. And some grow old faster than others. In the United States aging presidents has become a real obsession as you can see from the many aging presidents videos on YouTube.

Polemic
But the United States isn’t the only country where people are on the lookout for wrinkles and other signs of aging. In Germany the question whether former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder used hair conditioner (a fact Mr Schröder strongly denied) caused a big polemic.

The prototype of a fast aging British prime minister is Tony Blair. He started off young and sexy and ended up looking old, grey and run down.

Younger every day
However, there are exceptions. Since Brazilian President Dilma Roussef ran for office, she has started to look younger and younger. Insiders say this is due to the regeneration treatment she had just before her inauguration.

Italian President Silvio Berlusconi is also looking younger every day. Of course this has nothing to do with hair implants, false teeth and facelifts... “See this beautiful jacket?” Silvio tries to divert the attention. “Poetin gave it to me.”

Cute
Grey or not grey, who cares? As Mr Obama stammered - almost like a shy teenager - just before his birthday:

“And Michelle, you know, says that, you know, she — she — she still thinks, I’m, I’m cute, you know. And I guess that’s, that’s all that matters, isn’t it?”

some vips behind stage are more direct players, their faces deserve to be introduced too and perhaps easier to be read.

President Obama has just celebrated his 50th birthday, the other 50 years of his age have come from his time in the White House!

If you take upon your shoulders the worries of America and the world, wich are caused by others, encourage the man of this season. He deals with people who want to stay wealthy despite the influence they have on the poverty inflicted to all others because of our system of enterprice which does'nt require to have a hearth for other people.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown..

He's been President for 2-1/2 years and has yet to do anything in the best
interests of the American people. He's an agenda-driven ideologue and if he were not black he would have been impeached before this.

Vera Gottlieb 4 August 2011 - 5:32pm / Germany

For heaven's sake world...stop kissing the American behind. Who cares about his age, who cares if he is sexy or not, who cares...This man has betrayed the entire world. He should return the so ill-deserved Nobel prize.

Alfonso M 4 August 2011 - 10:30pm

He never asked for the Noble Peace Prize, so get off that horse

Vera Gottlieb 5 August 2011 - 6:06pm / Germany

But he didn't say "no thank you" either, did he? And adding insult to injury, in his acceptance speech he stated "war is peace". But then, the US has always been a violent nation.

He is greyer because he is not dying his hair anymore, he dyed it for the campaign.
