Published on 2 July 2009 - 7:54pm
More about:

French investigators have said that the Air France passenger jet which crashed in the Atlantic last month broke up when it hit the water and not in the air.

They also said they had no found no traces of fire or of explosives and that it is almost certain there was no bomb on board the plane. However, the cause of the crash still remains unclear.

The Airbus A330 was travelling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris when it crashed into the sea on 1 June, approximately three hours after takeoff. All 228 people on board flight AF 447 were killed.
