Nine Italians arrested in gambling scandal

Published on 23 November 2009 - 2:18pm
More about:

The Italian police have arrested nine people in connection with an international gambling scandal which recently came to light.

On Friday, the German police announced that 200 football matches in a number of European countries had been rigged. Players, coaches and referees were approached by a gang which offered to pay large sums of money to throw a match. The German authorities have arrested 15 suspects in connection with the scandal, and the Swiss two.

The European football union UEFA has been shocked by the scope of the scandal and said it would hold a crisis meeting on Wednesday. As far as known, no Dutch clubs are involved in the scandal.
