Nigeria's missing president calls home

Published on 12 January 2010 - 10:06am
More about:

President Umaru Yar'Adua of Nigeria has at last broken a silence that began when he travelled to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment last November.

He has told the BBC that his health is improving and that he hopes to return to Nigeria soon to resume his duties. Mr Yar'Adua, who is 58, has a serious heart condition and is also said to be suffering from a kidney disease.

The president's lengthy absence has prompted unrest in Nigeria. A demonstration is due to be held today, protesting against his absence and the lack of information surrounding his health.

Rumours have been circulating among the opposition that the president is dying. Some Nigerians were even convinced that their leader was already dead.
