Nigeria's parliament has voted to make Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan acting head of state until President Umaru Yar'Adua is well enough to resume his duties.
Since November, President Yar'Adua has been undergoing treatment for a serious heart condition in a hospital in Saudi Arabia.
Nigeria's opposition has accused the regime of playing down the president's illness and effectively paralysing the workings of government.
