Nigeria fuel tanker crash kills up to 80

Published on 10 October 2009 - 12:39pm
More about:

Between 70 and 80 people in Nigeria were burned alive when a fuel tanker exploded in the southern state of Anambra.

Eyewitnesses to the accident, which happened on Friday, say the blaze was ignited when a policeman fired a shot to keep passersby from the truck, which had toppled onto its side after hitting a pothole. A school bus is also believed to have been engulfed in the flames.

Nigeria's roads are often poorly maintained, causing daily accidents. The road safety director of Anambra warns that more such tragedies will occur if nothing is done to improve the state of Nigeria's roads. Their poor quality, he said, leads to almost daily accidents.
