Hundreds of Nigerian rebels from the Niger Delta region have handed over their weapons as part of an amnesty agreement. The handover took place during a ceremony in the town of Yanagoa, was the largest since the amnesty offer was first announced two weeks ago. The rebels have been given two months to accept the offer.
The rebels are demanding a greater share of the wealth from the oil production in the region. They attack oil drills and pipelines and kidnap workers. Many senior officers of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) have accepted the offer. However one fraction has denounced it and announced that it will resume attacks against the oil industry.
