New York court to try 9/11 mastermind

Published on 13 November 2009 - 10:01pm
More about:

A federal court in New York is to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is suspected of masterminding the attacks of 11 September 2001. Four others will also be tried over the attacks.

All five are currently being held in Guantánamo Bay. President Barack Obama has vowed to close the prison camp and have some of its detainees tried in regular courts in the United States. Late last year, Mr Mohammed, who was arrested in Pakistan in 2003, confessed to masterminding the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that the prosecution will seek the death penalty for all five.
