New York court to try 9/11 mastermind

Published on 13 November 2009 - 3:03pm
More about:

A New York court is to try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who is suspected of being behind the 9/11 attacks.

Another four people currently being held in Guantanamo Bay, will also face trial for the attacks on the twin towers in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on 11 September 2001.

At the end of last year, Mr Mohammed, who was arrested in 2003 in Pakistan, confessed to masterminding the killing of almost 3000 people.

US President Barack Obama has promised to close the prison camp at the US base on the island of Cuba. A group of prisoners suspected of an attack on the USS Cole warship in 2000 will probably face US military tribunals.

A number of the remaining prisoners are believed not to be involved in any wrongdoing and may be returned to their own countries or a third country. Very few countries, however, are willing to take in the remaining prisoners.
