In Lebanon, Saad al-Hariri has been appointed the country’s new prime minister. He is the son of former prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, who was murdered in 2005.
The new prime minister is the leader of the pro-Western coalition that won the Lebanese elections at the beginning of June, and which now has 71 of the 128 seats in the Lebanese parliament. The coalition beat the Shiite Hezbollah movement, which won only 57 seats.
The first task facing Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri is the formation of a new government. He has been asked to do so by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
