The alleged Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has been declared fit enough by medical experts to stand trial in Germany. Demjanjuk was deported from the US to Germany after a long extradition battle.
Originally from the Ukraine, the 89-year-old is wanted for being an accessory to the murder of some 29,000 Jews. Demjanjuk denies that he was a guard at Sobibor death camp.
His family had fought efforts to put him on trial, arguing that he is too ill. They say he suffers from spinal problems, kidney failure and anaemia. The only condition the doctors placed on their stamp of approval for the trial to proceed is that the court sessions should not exceed two 90-minute sessions each day. Prosecutors plan to file formal charges later this month.
