Nazi comparison raises Wilders followers' hackles

Published on : 10 November 2009 - 9:32am | By Rob Kievit
More about:

Geert Wilders' anti-Muslim PVV is at risk of becoming like the Nazi-era NSB party, according to Dutch singer and performer Herman van Veen.

Following his warning he received thousands of hatemails from Wilders supporters "which contained very nasty things" after he had warned against the undemocratic structure of Mr Wilders' Freedom Party. Geert Wilders issued a statement on Tuesday saying that he disapproves of any threats by his followers against Mr Van Veen.

The Berlin Wall
Populist daily De Telegraaf reported on Monday about a speech which Mr Van Veen, who is 64, gave at a a meeting in Utrecht to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Mr Van Veen reminded his audience that the Freedom Party does not accept members and is financed only by donations, not by fees. "Such a party is a threat to democracy," he said.

On his own website, Herman van Veen explained his view. His remarks on Sunday were prompted by reminiscences of a politically controversial interview he gave in East Berlin in 1989, three weeks before the Wall fell. The East-German reporter got into trouble with the communist authorities over the interview. Looking back at those events,

"I expressed my concern about the old totalitarian systems and said we must make sure that the structure of political parties is based on democratic principles. I want to explain that the Freedom Party should not become like the NSB. The history of one person should not become the future of another. In my view, the Freedom Party is not a political party, but an association, a movement, where one single man decides. That is not democratic. Hence my concern.

The character of the thousands of reactions I am receiving is confirming my worries."

The NSB was the Dutch pro-Nazi party between 1931 and 1945.

Demonising
Geert Wilders' lawyer, Bram Moszkowicz, said in a reaction on prime time TV that Van Veen's words are "farcical" and added, "I am tempted to use the words 'infamous' and 'abject'." The artist's remarks "are insulting two million people," Mr Moskowicz added, in a reference to the estimated following of the Freedom Party. He warned against the danger of "demonising" Geert Wilders. "It could lead to an attack. Demonised people have been killed in the past," he said, referring to the assassination of popular maverick politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002.

The media-savvy lawyer refuted any hints to Nazi tendencies in the Freedom Party by pointing to a meeting Geert Wilders recently had in the US with prominent Jewish writer Elie Wiesel. "Mr Wiesel would never have sat down with an NSB leader," Mr Moszkowicz said.

Freedom
So why is Mr Wilders' Freedom Party a one-man band without party members? "If there was a membership, all kinds of shadowy figures would be able to destroy the Freedom Party from within," Mr Moskowicz explained. Mr Wilders himself has not reacted to the statements, the lawyer said, because he thinks everyone in the Netherlands is entitled to speak out in public.

Reactions on the Telegraaf website point out that Geert Wilders is constantly referring to his freedom of expression when making statements seen by many as hate-mongering. But when someone else, like Herman van Veen, uses that same freedom, Mr Wilders' followers rise in anger. Respondents also claim that the entire row was caused by the Telegraaf's incorrect reporting of Mr Van Veen's words.

The US Army is dealing with the same problem with Islam. The politically correct approach caused lives. Here in Europe when people start saying we will take over your country, we will turn it into an Islamic one - then we should take them seriously. Not offer them concessions that the Islamist will only view as small victories toward achieving their ultimate goal. On the US military base - the warning signs kept popping up. They were not acted on because it would not have been politically correct or even deemed racist to do so. But you cannot have rights without life. The safety, security, as well as freedoms of the people in free democracies should be placed over any deference made to Muslim sensitives - based on Islamic law.

"he thinks everyone in the Netherlands is entitled to speak out in public." Apparently he is the only politician left in the Netherlands that thinks so. Gustav hit the nail on the head. How biased to mention the hate mail received by an opponent of Mr. Wilders, yet ignore all of the hate mail and death threats he has received. As mentioned he needs 24/7 armed guards. How are people not waking up from that simple fact alone?

I thing Geert Wilders is quite misunderstood.

It's true. The media in The Netherlands is generally biased against Wilders. The media is worried about presenting the wrong impression to Muslims in The Netherlands, of being politically incorrect, for fear of reprisals. The basic problem with any religion, whether Islam or Christian, is when theists, whether moderate or extreme, begin to indicate changing the laws so that state and church become one as in Iran or Saudi Arabia. If immigrants bring with them a religion that happens to clash with western traditions there is a problem as is the case with allowing sharia in The Netherlands, an issue which will become stronger in the future as Muslims form their own political party. This problem is not an idle threat to democratic principles. Only the blind fail to see it. It is probably already too late.

I agree with Gustav that the media in Nederland is generally blatantly biased against Wilders (including RNW) . If they believe this kind of propaganda works toward their goal ....they should think again because most people can see throught that for what it is (hate & intolerance). Indeed Mr. Wilders gets more death threats... since he spoke out several years ago he has needed to have daily 24-hour protection (which I believe must be paid for by the taxpayers ) .Can you imagine having to live like that in your own country? Think about it for a while . I find this to be outrageous in such a "tolerant" / "live and let live country" , but maybe it is because you are no longer as "toleranant " as you proclaim . I agree w/ Bram Moszkowicz that Van Veen's remarks are demonizing and I think that comments like his are " threats to intelligent minds". PS> Personally ,I do not give to most actors or singers the title of "artist ".

The only problem with this article is in the last paragraph, although it's not the fault of the article author, it's the failed logic of the commenters on the Telegraaf website. Both Geert Wilders and Herman van Veen are using their freedom of speech, and both of them have received angry reactions and death threats for their views. While I don't agree with Wilders' Freedom Party, I don't like to see how the media is so unabashedly biased against him and his supporters - that only fuels his flame and popularity. Geert Wilders never said that Herman van Veen shouldn't be allowed to say what he said. And certainly Geert Wilders gets more death threats from his opponents than Herman van Veen gets from Geert Wilders' supporters?

Wilders is just drawing attention to the fact that fundamentalist Islamists who bomb, maim and kill innocent people and destroy property are a scourge and plague for mankind. To hell with them! They have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.

NSB was more like socialist party, closer to the what PVDA is except of course PVDA are not Nazis, just liars and dumb. Wilders is certainly not a Nazi, he is just obnoxious at times.
