NATO chief on surprise visit to Afghanistan

Published on 5 August 2009 - 5:01pm
More about:

NATO's new secretary general, former Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, is on an unannounced visit to Afghanistan.

He is having talks with figures including Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Afghanistan is holding presidential elections on 20 August and it is largely up to NATO troops to ensure these pass off peacefully.

Mr Rasmussen took over as NATO chief on 1 August from former Dutch minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. When he assumed office, Mr Rasmussen said one of his priorities was improving the situation in Afghanistan.
