Myanmar journalist jailed for 13 years

Published on 29 January 2010 - 5:42pm
More about:

A court in Myanmar has sentenced a journalist accused of working illegally for a foreign news service to 13 years in prison.

The authorities arrested Ngwe Soe Lin, 28, in the capital Yangon in June on suspicion of working without proper accreditation for the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), a non-profit broadcaster run by Myanmarese exiles in the Norwegian capital Oslo. A lawyer for Mr Soe Lin said they are appealing against the sentence.

In December, Hla Hla Win, a 25-year-old female freelance journalist, was jailed for 25 after she too was found guilty of working for DVB.  The military junta that rules the country since 1962 maintains tight media censorship.
