Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been given permission by the ruling junta in Myanmar, formerly Burma, to talk to three members of her party.

She was taken to a location in Yangon for talks with 92-year-old party chairman Aung Shwe, secretary Lwin, 85, and executive committee member Lun Tin, 89, all of whom are in poor health. During the meeting, said one of the participants, she asked to be allowed to reorganize the party’s central executive committee.

The 64-year-old opposition leader, who has been under house arrest for almost 14 of the past 20 years, wrote a letter to the junta asking for permission to hold the meeting.

In the same letter she also let the country’s military rulers know that she was prepared to work towards the lifting of Western sanctions against Myanmar, for the benefit of the country. In the past, Ms Suu Kyi has been a strong advocate for the sanctions. However, in the past few months, she appears to be heading toward more cooperation with the junta.
