Mugabe refuses to yield to MDC boycott

Published on 24 October 2009 - 2:06pm
More about:

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe says he will not yield to pressure from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to make any concessions.

Last week, the prime minister's MDC party withdrew from the unity government after the arrest of Roy Bennet, one of its leaders, on suspicion of terrorist activities. Mr Tsvangirai says the MDC will only rejoin the cabinet once all outstanding issues, including cabinet appointments, have been resolved. The prime minister is also demanding an end to ongoing police harassment of his supporters. President Mugabe says the prime minister's withdrawal from the government is not in the country's interest. Both leaders, however, say the coalition is not at risk. Local media say the two will meet on Monday to break the deadlock.
