According to reports in the Iranian media, only 105 of 290 parliamentarians invited to attend a party celebrating President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election showed up. The Iranian president has accused United States President Barack Obama of behaving like his predecessor towards Tehran and has asked him to avoid interfering in Iran's affairs.
Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi says he is under enormous pressure to withdraw his complaints over the 12 June presidential election, which he described as a "shameful fraud". Mr Mousavi, who claims to have won the election, says he will continue to insist on a recount. "I cannot say that black is black and white is white," he said. He accused the authorities of restricting his contacts with his supporters and interfering with his websites.
Dozens of Mousavi's supporters have been jailed and a newspaper which sympathises with the opposition leader has been banned.
