Zahra Rahnavard, wife of the Iranian opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, has called for the release of all women detained since the disputed presidential election. On the reformist Kaleme website she demanded the women's “immediate and unconditional” release.
The June elections were won by sitting president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Supporters of moderate opposition candidate Mirhossein Mousavi claimed Mr Ahmadinejad re-election was fraudulent, and took to the streets in mass protest. Iranian security forces cracked down hard on the demonstrations, and many protestors were arrested and detained.
Mr Mousavi has called on his supporters to join fresh demonstrations on Wednesday 4 November. This is the 30th anniversary of the capture of the United States embassy in Tehran, after which radical students held embassy staff hostage for 444 days. Police have warned they will suppress any illegal protests.
