For the second time in two days, foreign soldiers have been shot dead in Sudan. Two Rwandan soldiers were killed on Saturday as they were distributing water at a refugee camp in the country’s Darfur region. Although no motive has yet been established, it’s thought the killers wanted to steal the soldiers’ vehicle.
On Friday, three Rwandan soldiers were killed while they were escorting a water transport in North Darfur.
All five victims were members of the United Nations African Union Mission (UNAMID). UNAMID was launched in January 2008 to bring stability to the war-torn Darfur region. It now has more than 18,000 personnel on the ground. Twenty-two peacekeepers have been killed since the mission began.
