More injury setbacks for Holland

More about:

Hedwiges Maduro left the Holland training pitch this morning with an ankle injury. The Valencia defender will be out of action for the Netherlands' two upcoming Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Moldova and Sweden, their final matches in Group E.

Holland boss Bert van Marwijk has called up Feyenoord defender Ron Vlaar to take Maduro's place. Vlaar is to join the squad at the training base in the seaside resort of Noordwijk later today.

The news follows an announcement late on Monday that starting goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg had been deemed unfit to play either on Friday and Tuesday. The AS Roma keeper is still smarting from a head injury after getting kicked in the face during a match with Inter Milan three weeks ago. No-one has been called up to replace him.

The Holland side
is now quite depleted, with star attraction Wesley Sneijder out of action with a groin injury and centre-back John Heitinga suffering a knee problem. More seriously, Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay tore a ligament in his knee last week, an injury that may cause him to miss next year’s finals.

Update 5 October:

Arjen Robben left the Holland training ground on Wednesday. The 27-year-old is suffering from an inflammation of the pubic bone. The injury has kept him out of action for a number of matches for both club and country.

That's bad! Body becomes more prone to injury if it gets inadequate rest. Wonder if the Oranje players are resting between the internationals or playing for their clubs!!!
