Minaret vote contravenes Swiss constitution

The Swiss referendum calling for a ban on the building of mosques with minarets is unlikely to make it into law. This is the view of the human rights group Amnesty International.

Nicole Sprokel from the Dutch arm of Amnesty says she does not expect the ban on minarets to become law as it contravenes the Swiss constitution:

"It is a violation of religious freedom of course, but it also discriminates because the measure affects one group."

Ms Sprokel thinks Switzerland’s own legislation will prevent the ban from being introduced. If that doesn’t happen she says the matter could be taken to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

More than 57 percent of those taking part in the referendum voted in favour of the so-called “anti-minaret initiative”.

This means a ban on the construction of mosques with a tower will be introduced. In its first response the Swiss government said it was shocked and disappointed, but would respect the result.

The result of the referendum was a surprise because polls indicated a slight majority against the proposal. Jacques Waardenburg, Islam expert at the University of Lausanne says it’s mainly Muslims in Switzerland who are surprised by the result.

"No Muslim thought that there would be such a majority. It must have shocked them."

Intolerance
The referendum was requested by the populist right-wing parties. The Swiss People’s Party (SVP),  Switzerland’s biggest political party since 2007, led the campaign saying minarets are a symbol of religious imperialism and Islamic intolerance.

The government and church organisations had urged people to vote against the proposal. Once the result was announced, the Swiss government hastily added that Muslims would be able to continue practising their religion. Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf is concerned that the ban will play into the hands of radical Muslims rather than reduce Islamic influence. The Swiss government fears that it "could damage Switzerland’s image as a tolerant country".

"Splendid result"
There have been angry reactions to the referendum from Islamic countries. In response to the result, the influential Grand Mufti Sheikh Ali Gomaa, who interprets Islamic legislation on behalf of the Egyptian government, says "it is not just an attack on religious freedom, but it is also an attempt to insult the Muslim community".

But in the Netherlands Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders has congratulated Switzerland on a "splendid result". He thinks the result of the Swiss referendum is a good example for the Netherlands.

Four percent van the Swiss population is Muslim. There are only four minarets in the country. Of more than 100 mosques in the country, the vast majority are located in old office buildings. Up to now Switzerland has been known as a pragmatic and tolerant country in regard to immigration, but in recent years the immigration debate has become increasingly fierce.

Christians in Egypt in Farshot city call for help A CALL FOR HELP Christians in Egypt in Farshot city, and in the cities Abu Tesht , Abu Shusha , Al-Arki , Al-Dahsa, Al-khawalid and Al-Kom Al-Ahmar, call on all societies and international human rights organizations for help. We are Christians living in these cities mentioned above are calling for help, since we were brutally attacked from Muslims who resides with us in the same cities. As a result of this attack, damages estimated at five million Egyptian pounds which are equivalent to one million U.S. dollars. On Saturday, November 21,2009 in the morning , we were surprised to see Muslim people , arranged in groups and distributed all-over the entire city of Farshot. They beat every Christian going in the street, whether was a man or a woman or a child. The Muslims were shouting Islamic slogans as if in Muslim invasions. They attacked the shops of Christians, broke the doors and stole every thing they found inside, then they set fire on these shops. Not a one was saved, all the shops owned by Christians, more than 40 shops had been destroyed while the attackers shouting Islamic verses. All of that was happening in front of the police without the least objection. The police forces did not stop any one of the terrorist attackers, but gave them a way to escape, as if the police mission is to help and protect the terrorists to carry out their plan safely and successfully... Some Christian families were forced to leave their homes to the street to be attacked and beaten from a Muslim group and another group steals their home properties. The Coptic Orthodox Assembly which helps poor Muslims and Christians in this town and neighboring towns, was founded officially before 30 years under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Affairs, aims to help people to learn a career and establish their own projects with some loan or credit. But those Muslims had broke into the Coptic Orthodox Assembly, robbed and vandalized it. What is written here is a little of what actually happened to us as Christian citizens of these towns. We have all documents, videos and photos which prove what happened, Anba Kerelos Bishop of Diocese of Nag Hammadi has all documents and is ready to submit them for investigation. We call for help and assistance in this crisis, since we did not find any help or protection from our Egyptian police. We appeal to international human rights organizations to intervene and take the necessary action to help us get our rights and live in peace in our homeland, This terrorist attack is a plan to evacuate these places from Christians after destroying them economically. Such terrorist attacks are repetitive all round the country and became as our daily bread. Attacking Christians and burning their homes, destroying their cars and shops, attacking churches, and kidnapping Christian girls, raping them and forcing them to change their religion to Islam - and government took no action. Although, human rights committees have reported these offenses and scandals, but the Egyptian government is totally negative.

europeans are acting as slaves to muslim religious aspirations....the europeans deserve the brickbats, they still get from muslims...some people don't even learn the hard way..

Hasn't Egypt got the nerve - a legally binding fatwa was issued last year that stated that for Muslims building a church is a sin and like that of building a barn for dogs, cats and pigs. They just killed 300,000 of the country's pigs owned by the Copts. It seems we are driven by some sort of guilt - that we cannot say to the Muslim world - that they are not doing what they should be doing. There has been at least one or two churches constructed in Qatar - in recent years - but there are no outward signs that they are churches. And for this westerners there must be extremely grateful. Contrast this to Muslims in the western world - who are allowed to construct mosques all over the place. And what is more - it seems that Muslim groups are working hard - to get the west to accept this disparity. Under Islamic law a non-Muslim is not allowed to build or repair a church - for years if the Copts in Egypt wanted to fix a broken tap - they had to apply for permission. To build a church in Egypt - needs presidential approval - and according to the US Commission for Religious Rights - there have been Coptic churches awaiting special presidential approval - for the last five years. Muslim law also calls for non-Muslims to be under - or to be subjugated in some form under Islam - so that the disparity between minority rights in the Muslim and Western world - in this context must be viewed as a form of takeover. Muslims can easily avert these concerns by simply building churches and other non-Muslim places of worship - and stop forcibly closing the ones they have - respecting people's religious rights - to pray [last week Egyptian Christians were arrested for praying over stroke victim at his home - without valid authorisation] and to leave Islam - would show the west they are meeting us half way. Maldives just passed a bill that would ban non-Muslims places of worship [non-Muslims cannot hold citizenship there] - and any visitor or expat caught breaking its religious laws is to serve 3-5 years in prison there. Politically correct was meant to be a nice way to say what is harsh - but what we are doing is using it not to look at what is harsh.

Prof Hedd still, the Amnesty International favours the muslims, even when they do not allow people of other religions to live or practice their religion in muslim countries. How audacious of muslims in europe to cry hoarse about discrimination! Fake muslims!
Prof Aig Hedd 30 November 2009 - 1:48pm / Germany
1)The Swiss can decide what they want in their own country. 2) In the last 60 years, how many churches have been constructed in the muslim countries? Zero! 3) In the last 60 years, how many mosques have been constructed in Europe? Thousands! 4) Every islamic commentator speaks about "discrimination" but tolerance is a 2-way street. 5) When in Rome, do as the Romans do! 6) Are the muslims in Europe listening?
