Dutch military unions say they are angry and disappointed that the government has collapsed over the mission in Uruzgan.
The unions, ACOM and AFMP, argue that the country's international standing has suffered a severe blow, and put most of the blame on Labour. AFMP says the debate about the mission failed to focus on the interests of Dutch troops. ACOM denounced Dutch politicians' "infantile behaviour".
ACOM head Jan Kleian says it will take months to withdraw Dutch soldiers from Afghanistan, even if the mission does end on 1 August and called it a "logistical nightmare".
A spokesperson for NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says he understand the decision to withdraw is part of a "national debate". But he added that NATO still welcomes a smaller Dutch mission beyond 1 August.
