Honduras' attorney general Luis Alberto Rubi has charged top military chiefs with "abuse of power" in the coup against president Manuel Zelaya. The former president was arrested and deported to Costa Rica in June last year.
Human rights groups had called on the country's highest legal institutions to denounce the coup. The Supreme Court initially supported Zelaya's removal from office, after he had attempted to change the constitution. Critics saw his move as a bid to prolong his term of office. Luis Rubi said that the army had misinterpreted the court's support for the coup.
The crisis in Honduras eventually led to new elections, which were won by the conservative Porfirio Lobo Sosa. He will be sworn in as the new president on 27 January.
