Mauritania hold first post-coup poll

Published on 18 July 2009 - 9:50am

Mauritania is holding its first elections after a bloodless coup last August.

The European Union has demanded free and fair elections for development aid to resume. Junta leader General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is tipped to win the poll. His main challengers are Ely Ould Mohamed and Ahmed Ould Daddah. Last August's coup ended the first two years of democratic rule after decades of military regimes.
