The trial has begun in Turkey of 65 people suspected of plotting to overthrow the Turkish government. They include two generals believed to have led and masterminded the planned coup, Sener Eruygur and Hursit Tolon.
The mass trial is part of a wider investigation into the mysterious underground organisation known as Ergenekon. Since October, 86 people have been prosecuted for alleged links with Ergenekon. The ruling Ak Party says the organisation is attempting to seize power in Turkey.
The opposition believes the Ak Party has invented Ergenekon in order to eliminate its political opponents and undermine democracy. Turkey is a secular state with a strict separation of politics and religion. The opposition is afraid the Ak Party is out to abolish this division.
