Many more weapons confiscated at Schiphol

Published on 9 September 2009 - 10:57am
More about:

So far this year customers officials and border police have confiscated 3300 weapons at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. That's a significant increase on previous years.

Around 1344 of the weapons confiscated up until 1 September were actually replicas. Although they are freely available in other countries, imitations and replicas of weapons are illegal in the Netherlands since they can be use to threaten people.

By way of comparison, 931 replica weapons were confiscated in 2007. Last year the figure was 1098.

Extra actions were mounted in August to intercept imitation weapons from Turkey and Spain. Travellers found with replicas were fined between 130 and 180 euros.

What does significant mean? There is no comparison with other years. What were these weapons? guns? knifes? crossbows?????
