Olympic skater Sven Kramer says he will soon be parting company with the coach who cost him his Olympic gold medal, according to a report in a local daily.
But Kramer’s business manager leapt in to deny the report on his return from Vancouver on Monday. He told Dutch news agency ANP that the skater and his coach Gerard Kemkers would definitely not be breaking up any time in the near future, and claimed Kramer had not even considered it.
According to the Leeuwarder Courant, Kramer said the all-round world championship three weeks from now would be the last time he would be coached by Kemkers.
Kramer and Kemker's relationship came under pressure in Vancouver when the coach made a bizarre blunder by directing Kramer into the wrong lane during the 10,000 metre race. Instead of taking gold, Kramer found himself disqualified.
However, the Dutch skating hero stressed he would not be parting with his coach because of this incident. “We've known about this for some time," he told the paper, "This isn’t new to us. I’m not the person to give anyone the boot. I’m just ready for something new.”
