Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has gone on trial for sodomy in Kuala Lumpur. Mr Anwar has dismissed the charges as politically motivated.
Homosexual acts are illegal in Malaysia and if convicted he could face up to 20 years in prison.
In 1998 he also stood trial on sodomy and corruption charges, shortly after being dismissed from the post of deputy prime minister. He served six years in jail. The conviction for sodomy was later repealed.
Under Mr Anwar's leadership, the opposition dealt a strong blow to the ruling BNP party in the 2008 elections. The BNP has held onto power for the last 50 years.
