In Madagascar Eugene Mangalaza, a professor of anthropology, has been appointed prime minister of a new interim government.
His appointment is part of an agreement closed by the island’s four main political groups after months of difficult negotiations. The four parties agreed to a power-sharing deal and to the appointment of the relatively unknown Professor Mangalaza.
Former president Marc Ravalomanana, who was deposed earlier this year, rejected the agreement because it permitted his political opponent Andry Rajoelina to remain president of Madagascar. Current Prime Minister Monja Roindefo also rejected the agreement and refused to resign his position. All the other ministers supported it and accepted Professor Mangalaza’s nomination.
Elections are scheduled to be held in Madagascar within the next six months.
