The Macedonian authorities have arrested the captain of the boat that sank on Lake Ohrid on Saturday, killing 15 Bulgarian tourists on board.
Macedonian officials say the boat had a capacity of 42 but the captain had allowed 53 Bulgarian tourists along with three other crew members on board the Ilindin. A Macedonian magistrate has ordered the captain and owner of the vessel, 23-year-old Sotir Filevski, to be held for 30 days pending investigation.
The Ilindin, built in 1924, lurched violently to one side, broke in two and then sank very rapidly. Survivors say the vessel did not have lifejackets.
Bulgarian President Georgy Parvanov has flown to Macedonia to a comfort survivors and Sofia cancelled Unification Day, a major national holiday, and declared a day of mourning instead.
