'Loverboy' pimps: what’s love got to do with it?

Published on : 31 May 2011 - 4:48pm | By Tim Fisher (graphic: stoploverboysnu)
More about:

New-style pimps known as ‘loverboys’ have put the small Dutch town of Veenendaal in the limelight, after a TV documentary exposed their activities.

Loverboys are young men who befriend vulnerable girls, woo them into a sexual relationship, then coerce them into having sex with other men in exchange for financial and other rewards. Which the loverboys keep for themselves.

It’s already a well-known phenomenon in the Netherlands. But TV documentary Dossier Loverboy aired by public broadcaster NTR at the weekend revealed how these young predatory pimps are affecting one small town - Veenendaal - at the heart of the Netherlands. The programme shocked the local authorities into action. They promptly called a meeting on Monday to discuss the problem with the police and representatives of campaign group

But young people in the town and Anita de Wit of say the problem is far from new to Veenendaal.

One loverboy victim claims that at least 30 girls between the ages of 12 and 18 have been ‘recruited’ by a gang of these youths, according to free daily Spits. The police have also received alarming reports about the scale of the loverboy network in the area, the paper adds.

Anita de Wit hopes the local authorities will now take real action to tackle the problem. If not, she says, “I’ll be knocking on their door again. The lid has to come off this cesspit.”

She partly puts Veenendaal’s loverboy problem down to the strictness of the town’s large Protestant Christian community – although not all the victims come from religious backgrounds.

“Many things are taboo here. As a result of their upbringing the local girls sometimes aren’t aware of all the various aspects of sex. On the other hand, you have a large group of young boys of Moroccan origin who know everything about the subject. Put those two groups together and it’s got to go wrong, big time. This has been going on here for years.”

“Because it’s taboo to talk about it [sex], those boys can operate at will,” says the documentary’s maker Roy Dames.

Young people in Veenendaal told Spits that loverboys approach their potential victims in person on the streets, near schools for example. They also use social networking websites, where they may first make contact by ‘liking’ a young girl’s photo.

One 15-year-old says her parents have banned her from cycling to school because of the loverboy threat. But travelling by bus hasn’t proved to be a much safer alternative: “They spend more time hanging around the bus stop than they do waiting next to the bike tunnel.”

I didn't read the article. But I'm stupid and think everyone does what's morally right all the time. It's a good thing the authorities are taking concrete steps but leave no evidence of their actions but its ok I'm so smart I know what their steps are. It's imaginary but ill say they're concrete idea just to make a dizzy blonde simpleton pun. Get it concrete. I'm so smart. Let me scan the article for a word I don't kno I can steal to make myself sound ejyoukated. Cesspit

Jasmin, you're an idiot. More like, "good to know some people choose not to, or just flat out CAN'T, read simple english, comprehend what they pretended to read, and act even slightly educated." Pretty ignorant to read an article about someone questioning the authorities efforts on underage prostitution, only to say you're glad they're doing a swell job, with no evidence to backup your ignorant spew of nonsense. If anything, the evidence provided in this article says they aren't doing jack schit. Learn to read; it's dumb bimbos like you who perpetuate the dumb blonde stereotype, confirming what these loverboys think about your gender. If you act dumb, don't expect much respect. Don't expect it from those who prey on your lack of basic comprehension skills, and definitely don't expect it from prostitute sympathizers like me, because you hurt our efforts to try to get police to act by you reading that they aren't doing anything to stop it, but for some reason still think they're doing a bangup job. I hope you try to get yourself a GED, or even a middle school education, for if you don't, I see your future as one of these girls we fight to protect. And, somehow, I don't think we'll care as much when the victim wasn't tricked; she was just dumb enough to tell her she was going to be sold into sex slavery for you to reply, "I'm glad to hear you guys are finally doing something to get me into a job, even if I'm terribly under-qualified. Gee thanks guys."

Prostitution, the age of 11 would be very nice.

Good to know that the authorities are taking concrete steps to save girls from drowning in the cesspit.

Sorry, I didn't know you could reply directly. Hopefully, since you're a registered user you'll be notified, and hopefully you don't think the notification being brought to your attention constitutes a Completed Action, by the website, deliberately and specifically creating, or to make a dumb, awkwardly-placed pun, 'pouring,' concrete steps to make you more socially-aware, or some other feel-good emotion you can somehow twist out of nothing, or, as in your original case, completely and entirely the exact opposite. Since your comment is from a good, long while ago, I'm hoping you're a bit wiser, but I'll also settle for a bit older. Either way, I hope you can read your comment, re/read(probably read) the article, possibly re-read your comment, and see the humor in what you wrote. I'm going to refrain from copy/pasting my original unaddressed reply, as it was written in anger, because ignorance is these lover-boys' weapon. Whether it be ignorance of sexual nature, as is the case of the girls these lover-boys prey on, or ignorance of the actual article and its contents, including indications of current, combative action being taken, according to the article, as is/was(hopefully was) your case, it's my belief we, as a people, need to get rid of all ignorance, if we ever want to stop human trafficking in any or all forms.

No ownership please. Please dare have sexual relationship outdoor in natural surroundings for public viewing. If naturally learning from each other takes place, not teaching, it's successful society. If third person gets involved as an educator who's against that girl's will and persuade her, it's dangerous education.
