London summons Chinese envoy over execution

Published on 29 December 2009 - 3:22pm
More about:

Great Britain has summoned the Chinese ambassador to London to protest against the execution of a British man.

Earlier today, 53-year-old Akmal Shaikh was executed despite repeated appeals for clemency on the grounds of mental illness. London has accused Beijing of refusing to take Mr Shaik's medical condition into account. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown sharply condemned the execution saying he was "appalled and disappointed" that China ignored repeated appeals for mercy and refused to assess Akmal Shaikh's mental condition.

Mr Shaikh was put to death by lethal injection this morning in the city of Urumqi in Xinjiang province. He was sentenced to death in 2007 after being convicted of smuggling four kilos of heroin into China. On Monday, the Chinese Supreme Court said there was insufficient evidence to prove that mental illness was factor in the case, thereby paving the way for the execution to go ahead. Before the court ruling, China's ambassador to London said Mr Shaik had been tried in accordance with Chinese law.

"British Prime Minister Gordon Brown sharply condemned the execution saying he was "appalled and disappointed" that China ignored repeated appeals for mercy and refused to assess Akmal Shaikh's mental condition."......Mr. Brown, I wonder how many innocent, British citizens die each year from heroin entering the UK? Every time a British citizen dies from an overdose of heroin, it is caused by people who smuggle heroin into the Isles. Just because you don't care about protecting British citizens from the misery and death of hard drugs like heroin, don't condemn China for executing a person who smuggled four kilos of heroin into their country. The British need to get out of the business of dictating morality especially when it knows notning about morality. It is an amoral country that defends murderers and drug dealers but does nothing to stop the mass killing of innocent babies. Mr. Brown, defend the babies and maybe the world might believe you and the British are really concerned about protecting the lives of mentally retarted drug dealers and murderers. So mote it be!
