The Kosovar population is going to the polls today to vote in the first local elections since the region won its independence from Serbia early last year.
Kosovo, which has a predominantly ethnic Albanian population, says it is determined to hold free and fair elections. President Fatmir Sejdiu urgently called on his citizens to vote in the elections. He wants to show that Kosovo can make a contribution to peace and security in the region.
However, Kosovo's Serb minority does not recognise the region's independence and the Serbian government has urged them to boycott the elections. Belgrade regards Kosovo as a renegade province. Kosovo has an ethnic Serb population of about 120,000 out of a total of 1.5 million inhabitants. Most of the Serbs live in the north of Kosovo, in the border region with Serbia. The Kosovar police and NATO peacekeepers will monitor the elections.
