Lithuania has shut down its only nuclear power station. The Baltic state promised to close the power station in exchange for entry into the European Union.
The 26-year-old nuclear plant was the same type as the one that exploded in Chernobyl in 1986, and Brussels considered it to be unsafe.
The closure of the power station means Lithuania loses a cheap source of energy and has become more dependent on Russia.
The nuclear power stations supplied almost 75 percent of the country’s energy.
