Financial problems are threatening the existence of a liberal mosque in Amsterdam. But the chairperson of the mosque's board, Yassmine el Ksaihi, has told Radio Netherlands Worldwide she hopes that the problem can be solved.
The mosque, known as the Poldermoskee, opened 18 months ago and differs from other mosques in the Netherlands in that men and women are allowed to pray together in the same room and also by its sole use of the Dutch language.
The mosque is facing 50,000 euros in rent arrears and its landlord has given the mosque until 1 March to pay its debts. Ms El Ksaihi said that the mosque board will not accept financial help from abroad. The Amsterdam mosque has begun a collection amongst its worshippers.
