Lebanese President Michel Suleiman has designated Saad al-Hariri as prime minister and charged him with forming a new government for the second time.
Last week, Mr Hariri stepped down after efforts to forge a coalition government failed. He accused Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria, of thwarting his efforts to create a unity government representing Wall of Lebanon's main parties.
Mr Hariri and his pro-Western coalition won the June general election by a landslide, taking 71 of the 128 available seats. Despite winning a majority, Mr Hariri wanted to Hezbollah to take part in the coalition government. Saad al-Hariri is one of Lebanon's most influential Sunni politicians and the son of assassinated Lebanese politician Rafik al-Hariri.
The caretaker cabinet led by Prime Minister Fouad Siniora will stay on until a new government is formed.
