Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Lebanese capital Beirut to commemorate the death of former prime minister Rafik Hariri.
Mr Hariri was killed five years ago by a car bomb that also claimed the lives of 22 other people. His murder provoked fury in many Lebanese, who accused Syria of involvement in the bombing. Following massive Lebanese demonstrations and heavy international pressure, Syrian troops ended their decades-long occupation of the small Mediterranean country in April 2005.
However, nobody has ever been accused of Mr Hariri’s murder and Syria continues to deny responsibility for it. A tribunal set up by the United Nations in 2009, and based in the Netherlands, is investigating the murder.
