Latest US drone raid 'kills Pakistani rebels'

Published on 17 January 2010 - 4:24pm
More about:

At least 15 Islamist rebels are reported to have been killed in northwestern Pakistan in an attack by an unmanned United States drone. The Pakistani authorities say the attack destroyed a rebel camp near Miranshah in South Waziristan, killing mostly foreign rebel fighters.

Attacks in the area by unmanned drones are mainly targetted against the leader of the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, Hakimullah Mehsud. He is thought to be sheltering in the region, which borders Afghanistan.

Since Thursday, at least 41 rebels are reported to have been killed in Pakistan by attacks using unmanned drones. The Taliban say Hakimullah Mehsud has escaped the raids and is still alive.
