The last day of the Nijmegen four-day walking event began at four o'clock this morning. The route takes the walkers to Cuijk and then back to Nijmegen where there will be a party in the Sint Anna Street, which has been renamed the Via Gladiola for the occasion. Of the 41,205 walkers who started out on Tuesday, only 37,454 are still in the race.
Following a false alarm earlier in the week, a case of Mexican flu among the competitors has now been confirmed. The woman, a British soldier, has been hospitalised.
Other events in the Netherlands were also affected by the H1N1 virus. In Kerkrade, three foreign musicians at the World Music Concours were taken ill, as were three women at the 110th anniversary party of the Utrecht student union UVSV. All of them are recovering.
