Landmark US tobacco regulation

Published on 12 June 2009 - 10:00pm
More about:

The US Congress has overwhelmingly approved new legislation to regulate the tobacco industry. The measure bans the use of words like "mild" or "light", which experts say are misleading because cigarettes sold as such are just as harmful.

Larger, more specific health warnings will have to cover the front and back of cigarette packages. The bill also bans tobacco advertising near schools and calls for awareness campaigns to discourage young people from smoking. Under the measure, tobacco companies must disclose the ingredients in their products and allow the government to require changes to protect public health. President Barack Obama, who has admitted having difficulty quitting smoking, is to sign the bill later on Friday.
